Approximately 25 percent of the adult population 20 years of age or older has high blood cholesterol levels--levels that are high enough to need intensive medical attention. A 10-year study by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute concluded that for every 1 percent drop in cholesterol levels, there is a 2 percent reduction in heart disease risk.
